Laminate, Phenolic or Veneer?
Let’s Make This Decision Easier
There comes a point in almost every custom project when someone asks a seemingly simple question: “Laminate vs. phenolic vs. veneer—which one should we use?”
We’d love to give you a one-word answer.
Really.
It would make meetings considerably shorter.
But the answer usually starts with another question:
“Well… where is it going?”
Because the material that makes perfect sense for one space may be unnecessary for another.
A high-moisture environment has different demands than a reception area. A team locker room has different priorities than architectural millwork in a hospitality space. Then there’s appearance, maintenance, durability, budget—and what you actually want the finished space to feel like.
So rather than declaring a winner, let’s talk about three materials we work with regularly at Legends: laminate, phenolic, and veneer plywood.
And more importantly, let’s talk about why you might choose one over another.

Laminate:
The One With Options
Let’s start with laminate.
One of the things we like about laminate is flexibility.
Laminate is a manufactured surface applied over a core material, and there is a wide range of colors and appearances available. It’s also easy to maintain.
But here’s the part that sometimes gets overlooked:
The core matters, too.
The appropriate core can change depending on where and how the finished product will be used. That gives us options when we’re trying to balance appearance, environment, performance, and budget.
In other words, choosing laminate isn’t necessarily the end of the material conversation.
Sometimes it’s the beginning of a better one.

Phenolic:
When the Environment Has Opinions
Then there’s phenolic.
Phenolic is made from compact layers of paper combined with resin, creating its distinctive dark inner core. It’s extremely durable and particularly well suited to high-moisture environments. Like laminate, it’s also available in a wide variety of colors.
This is where knowing the environment becomes really important.
If the space has demanding moisture conditions, phenolic may be a very good material to consider.
But—and this is an important but—phenolic is also considerably more expensive.
So we don’t believe in recommending it simply because it’s the more expensive option.
Sometimes you need it.
Sometimes another material and core combination can meet the needs of the environment without adding cost that isn’t necessary.
That’s why we’d rather ask a few questions before telling you what to specify.

Veneer Plywood:
When You Want the Real Thing
Then we get to veneer plywood.
This one has an entirely different personality.
If the goal is a natural, elegant wood finish, veneer plywood is a beautiful option.
And part of its appeal is precisely that it isn’t perfectly identical from sheet to sheet.
Because you’re working with a natural wood product, you’ll see variations in grain, texture, and color. Two sheets of the same veneer can look slightly different because, well…
Trees aren’t manufactured in batches.
That’s part of what makes the finished product interesting.
You’re getting the warmth and character of a natural material while still working with something durable enough for the types of custom projects we’re building.
So Which One Is Best?
Here comes the frustrating answer again:
It depends.
But that’s actually good news.
Because the goal shouldn’t be to choose the material someone tells you is “the best.”
It should be to choose the material that’s right for your project.
Where is it going?
How will people use it?
Is moisture a consideration?
What kind of maintenance makes sense?
What appearance are you trying to create?
What’s the budget?
Those answers help narrow the field surprisingly quickly.
And they’re just as relevant when we’re talking about custom athletic lockers as they are when we’re creating architectural woodwork for hospitality environments. Grace specifically highlighted both applications in her overview because these material decisions extend well beyond the locker room.
Sometimes the Best Material Decision Starts With Not Choosing One Yet
Architects and GCs may come to us with specifications already well underway.
Coaches and facility leaders may come to us with nothing more than a photo and an idea of what they like.
Both are perfectly good places to start.
What we don’t want is for someone to spend more simply because they assumed they needed a particular material—or choose something based solely on appearance before considering how it will perform in the actual environment.
That’s where the conversation becomes useful.
Show us the space. Tell us how it’s going to be used. Tell us what you’re trying to accomplish.
Then we can talk laminate.
We can talk phenolic.
We can talk veneer.
And if the answer isn’t the one you expected when we started?
That’s okay.
That’s kind of the point.
