The Phone Call Every Company Wants to Get

When URI needed new football lockers, they already knew who they were calling.

When URI needed new football lockers, they already knew who they were calling.

There are phone calls every company wants to get.

Not the one that starts with:

“Can you send us some information?”

Not even:

“Can we get a quote?”

It’s the call from someone you’ve worked with for years who says, essentially:

“We’ve got another project.”

No introduction necessary.

No explaining who you are.

No starting the relationship over from scratch.

They already know you.

More importantly, they trust you.

That’s the story behind our latest project with the University of Rhode Island.

And technically, it’s a story about football lockers.

But not really.

New Football Lockers for URI by Legends Lockers

This Story Started Long Before the Football Locker Room

URI has been a Legends customer for years.

Over that time, we’ve had the opportunity to work on spaces for several of their athletic programs, including softball, volleyball, soccer and lacrosse.

Different teams.

Different rooms.

Different projects.

But something important was happening between all of them.

A relationship was being built.

Grace Parker put it pretty simply when we talked about the project:

“They continue to come back to us because we’re a trusted source for them.”

And eventually, another need came up.

Football.

URI was ready for new football lockers.

And according to Grace, Legends was the first company they contacted—and the only one.

That’s the part of the project we think is worth talking about.

When the Next Project Doesn’t Need a Sales Pitch

There's a funny thing about long-term relationships.

There’s a funny thing about long-term relationships.

Eventually, the conversation changes.

It stops being:

“Here’s what we can do.”

And starts becoming:

“Okay, here’s what we’re thinking this time.”

That’s a completely different conversation.

The university already knows how you communicate.

They know how you work.

They know what happens when questions come up.

They know whether you’ll answer the phone.

And they know what it feels like to get to the other side of a project together.

That’s something you can’t really demonstrate in a brochure.

You have to earn it one project at a time.

For URI, football became the next project in a relationship that had already included several other athletic programs.

So our job wasn’t to convince them that Legends could build lockers.

Our job was to help them create the next room.

There Wasn’t a Giant Problem to Solve

We should probably tell you something else about this project.

There wasn’t some enormous construction crisis.

There wasn’t a bizarre material problem.

Nobody called us at midnight because something had gone horribly wrong.

It was simply a good project with a longtime customer.

And we actually think there should be more stories like that.

URI wanted new football lockers.

We worked with them through the design process.

The project moved forward over the summer.

And the new lockers were ready for the team as they started the new year.

Sometimes that’s what a successful project looks like.

Not dramatic.

Just people who know how to work together getting the job done.

And Then the Athletes Walk In

This might be our favorite part.

The project was completed over the summer, which meant the football team could come back and start the new year with something waiting for them:

a new locker room.

There’s something different about seeing a space empty during installation and then imagining what happens the first time the team walks through the door.

The lockers aren’t samples anymore.

They’re not drawings.

They’re not dimensions on an approval sheet.

They’re theirs.

And that’s when months of planning suddenly become very real.

Take a look inside the University of Rhode Island football locker room.

Want This Moment Next Summer? Start Before Summer.

There’s another reason Grace wanted to tell this story now.

Summer is an incredibly important window for collegiate athletic facility projects.

Teams are between seasons. Campuses may have more flexibility. And athletic departments often want improvements completed before athletes return for another year.

But here’s the catch:

A summer installation doesn’t begin in the summer.

There’s work that has to happen first.

Ideas need to become plans.

Layouts need to be discussed.

Materials and finishes need to be selected.

Details need to be approved.

Manufacturing needs time.

And installation needs to fit into everything else happening on campus.

Grace sees schools wanting exactly what URI accomplished—use the summer to get the work done so athletes can return to something new. Her advice was simple: if that’s the goal, start planning early enough to make it possible.

The best time to start talking about next summer’s project may be while everyone else is still thinking about this season.

The Real Goal? Becoming the Next Phone Call.

Of course, we’re proud of the lockers.

We’re proud whenever we get to see a finished Legends project being used by the people it was built for.

But there’s something about this one that goes beyond the finished room.

URI called us again.

After softball.

After volleyball.

After soccer.

After lacrosse.

When football needed a new space, the relationship continued.

For us, that’s what long-term partnership actually looks like.

It isn’t a slogan.

It isn’t something you put on a capabilities sheet.

It’s much simpler.

You finish one project.

You do what you said you’d do.

You stay in touch.

And someday the phone rings again.

On the other end is someone you’ve worked with before saying:

“We’ve got another project.”

That’s the phone call every company wants to get.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the goal is to have a new football locker room ready for the next season, it’s a good idea to begin the conversation well before summer. Design decisions, layouts, materials, approvals, manufacturing, scheduling, and installation all take time. URI’s football lockers were completed over the summer so the team could begin the new year with its new space.

Yes. Legends works with collegiate athletic programs across a variety of sports. At the University of Rhode Island alone, Legends has worked on spaces for programs including softball, volleyball, soccer, lacrosse, and now football.

Yes. Legends can work with a school through the locker design process rather than simply manufacturing a predetermined locker. For the URI football project, Grace explained that Legends helped with the design process for the new lockers.

A successful first project can make future projects much easier because the school and manufacturer already understand how each other works. URI has worked with Legends for years across multiple athletic programs. When the university needed new football lockers, Grace said Legends was the first—and only—company they contacted.

No. An early conversation can happen while a project is still taking shape. In fact, starting earlier provides more time to work through the design, materials, scheduling, manufacturing, and installation considerations before the desired completion date.

Thinking About Next Summer Already?

If there’s a locker room, team space or custom millwork project somewhere on your list for next summer, you don’t need to have everything figured out yet.

That’s what the first conversation is for.
